AC Not Cooling? What GTA Homeowners Should Check

Toronto humidity makes a weak air conditioner obvious fast. Before you book, here is how to narrow down what is wrong — and what the fix usually costs.
Blowing warm air
Check the thermostat is on COOL and set below room temperature, then check the breaker for both the furnace and the outdoor condenser. If the outdoor fan is not spinning but you hear a hum, the capacitor is the most likely culprit — a $220–$380 repair and one of the most common calls we run in July.
Running constantly but never cooling
Usually low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, or an undersized system. Refrigerant is not consumed — if it is low, there is a leak, and topping it up without finding the leak is money burned. Leak search and repair typically runs $450–$1,200 depending on location.
Ice on the refrigerant line
Turn the system off and run the fan only to thaw it. Icing means restricted airflow (filter, blower, closed vents) or low refrigerant. Running it iced can destroy the compressor — the one failure that usually ends the system.
Weak airflow from the vents
Filter first, then ductwork. Homes across Etobicoke and North York with long, leaky trunk runs lose real capacity before the air reaches the far bedroom. Duct cleaning and sealing often recovers more comfort than any thermostat change.
Water around the furnace
The evaporator drain is plugged. Cheap to clear, expensive to ignore once it reaches drywall or a finished basement.
