Air Conditioning Repair in Toronto & the GTA
Fast, refrigerant-certified AC diagnosis and repair through the Ontario summer.
An air conditioner that runs but does not cool is telling you something specific — and it is usually one of six things. We test airflow, refrigerant charge, capacitor health, condenser condition, the thermostat circuit and the condensate path before recommending any work.

Overview
How we approach ac repair
Refrigerant is not consumed by a working system. If your AC is low on charge, there is a leak, and topping it up without finding that leak simply sells you the same repair again next summer. We locate and repair leaks, then charge to the manufacturer's weighed-in specification rather than by feel.
Ontario summers put condensers under real load. A unit choked with cottonwood, grass clippings or a decade of dust will run hot, draw high amperage and shorten its own compressor life long before anything visibly fails. Cleaning and amp-draw testing are part of every service call, not an upsell.
A system that is not cooling is almost never simply low on refrigerant. Refrigerant is a sealed charge — if it is low, it leaked, and adding more without finding the leak buys you one season at most. We measure superheat and subcooling to determine whether the charge is genuinely off, then leak-search rather than top up and leave.
Airflow causes as many summer callbacks as the outdoor unit does. A restricted filter, a dirty evaporator coil or a return that was undersized when the system went in will freeze the coil, and a frozen coil presents as an outdoor unit running constantly with warm air at the registers. We check the indoor side before condemning anything outside.
When to book
The first genuine heat wave of the season produces most of the year's AC failures in a single week, because that is the first time the system runs continuously.
What drives the price
Capacitors and contactors are inexpensive and stocked; compressors, coil replacements and leak repairs on older refrigerant types are where cost escalates sharply.
Call now, or book it in?
Call now
- No cooling during a heat warning, especially with vulnerable occupants in the home
- Burning smell from the indoor or outdoor unit
- Breaker tripping every time the system starts
Can be scheduled
- Cooling but slowly
- Ice on the refrigerant line
- Outdoor unit noisier than last season
- Higher hydro bills with no change in use
Our process
- 1Book & confirmDescribe the symptom, get a real arrival window.
- 2Full system testAirflow, superheat and subcooling, capacitor microfarads, amp draw, condensate path.
- 3Leak searchIf the charge is low we find the leak rather than just topping up refrigerant.
- 4Quote & repairWritten price first, then the repair, then a weighed-in charge to spec.
- 5Performance checkWe record the supply-return temperature split so you can see the system is actually performing.
What affects the cost
- Capacitor and contactor faults are the least expensive and most common repairs
- Refrigerant leak repairs vary widely with the location of the leak
- R-22 systems cost significantly more to recharge than R-410A
- Compressor failure is usually a replacement conversation, not a repair one
- Access — rooftop and tight side-yard installs take longer
FAQ
AC Repair questions
Why is my AC running but not cooling?
In order of frequency: a clogged filter or blocked return starving the system of airflow, a failed run capacitor, low refrigerant from a leak, a dirty condenser coil, or a frozen evaporator. A technician can separate these in about 30 minutes with proper gauges.
Should I just add refrigerant?
No. A sealed system does not lose refrigerant unless it has a leak. Adding refrigerant without finding the leak is a temporary fix, is worse for efficiency and is discouraged under Canadian environmental handling rules.
How often should an AC be serviced?
Once a year, ideally in spring before the first hot week. Annual coil cleaning and electrical testing is the single biggest factor in how long a condenser lasts.
My outdoor unit is frozen in July. What does that mean?
Ice means the coil is running below freezing, almost always because of restricted airflow or a low charge. Turn the system off, leave the fan running to thaw it, and book a diagnosis — running it iced up can destroy the compressor.
