Heat Pump Installation in Toronto & the GTA
Cold-climate and hybrid heat pump systems sized and commissioned for Ontario winters.
A heat pump is an air conditioner that also runs backwards, giving you cooling in summer and most of your heating in winter from electricity. In Ontario the question is not whether it works in the cold — modern cold-climate units do — but how it is paired with your existing furnace.

Overview
How we approach heat pump
For most GTA homes the sensible configuration is dual-fuel: a cold-climate heat pump does the heating down to a set outdoor temperature, and the gas furnace takes over below it. Set the balance point correctly and you get most of the heating season on the heat pump at lower cost, with the furnace as guaranteed capacity for the worst weeks. Set it badly and you get an expensive air conditioner.
Commissioning matters more on a heat pump than on any other appliance we install. Refrigerant charge, airflow, defrost operation, backup lockout and the thermostat's changeover logic all have to be verified in the field. We record every one of those readings and hand them to you, because an uncommissioned heat pump underperforms quietly for years.
Cold-climate heat pumps work in Ontario, but only when the design is honest about the balance point — the outdoor temperature below which the heat pump can no longer carry the load alone. We calculate that number for your house rather than quoting a generic one, and we set the changeover so the backup heat engages when it is actually needed instead of running alongside the compressor and erasing the savings.
The configuration matters as much as the equipment. A dual-fuel setup pairs the heat pump with your existing gas furnace and switches over on the coldest nights; an all-electric setup uses electric backup and needs the panel capacity to support it. We check the electrical service before quoting, because a heat pump proposal that ignores panel capacity is not a real quote.
When to book
Spring and early autumn are the practical install windows — the system can be commissioned and tested in both modes without leaving you without heat or cooling.
What drives the price
Capacity, cold-climate rating and backup configuration set the equipment price; electrical service upgrades and duct modifications set the installation price. Available rebates change the net number.

What affects the cost
- Capacity, and whether the unit is standard or true cold-climate rated
- Ducted versus ductless multi-head configuration
- Whether the electrical panel has capacity or needs a service upgrade
- Line set routing distance and whether it can be concealed
- Whether the existing furnace stays as dual-fuel backup or is replaced at the same time
FAQ
Heat Pump questions
Do heat pumps actually work in {city} winters?
Cold-climate models produce useful heat well below minus 20, and in {city} that covers the large majority of the heating season. We still recommend dual-fuel for most homes so there is guaranteed capacity during the coldest stretches.
Will a heat pump lower my bills?
It shifts cost from gas to electricity. Whether that saves money depends on the balance point and current rates, which is why we model it against your actual usage rather than quoting a generic percentage.
Can I keep my furnace?
Yes, and usually you should. Dual-fuel keeps the furnace as backup and as capacity insurance, and it is the configuration we install most often across the GTA.
Does a heat pump replace my air conditioner?
It does — a heat pump provides cooling identical to a conventional AC. If your AC is due for replacement, that is the natural moment to consider one.
