Spring AC Tune-Up: What a Real Service Includes
· by Diamond Home Services
A proper air conditioning tune-up is more than a hose-down. Here is the full checklist, what it costs in the GTA, and what it saves you in July.
A spring tune-up runs $180–$280 in the GTA. Done properly, it is the cheapest insurance you can buy against a mid-heatwave failure — and it is the difference between an air conditioner lasting 10 years and 18.
What a real tune-up covers
- Condenser coil cleaning. Cottonwood, dust and grass clippings choke the coil every spring. A clogged coil raises head pressure and electricity use immediately.
- Refrigerant charge verification by superheat and subcooling, not by guessing at the gauge.
- Electrical check. Capacitor microfarad reading, contactor pitting, amp draw on the compressor and fan motor. A capacitor reading low in May is the one that fails in July.
- Evaporator coil and drain. Clear the condensate trap and confirm flow before it backs up into the basement.
- Blower and filter. Airflow across the coil is the single biggest driver of cooling performance.
- Thermostat calibration and cycle test with a temperature-split measurement at supply and return.
What a cheap "tune-up" usually is
Someone rinses the outdoor unit with a garden hose, writes a receipt and leaves. No readings, no report. If you did not get numbers — temperature split, capacitor value, amp draw — nothing was actually verified.
Why it matters in Toronto
Our cooling season is short and intense. Systems sit idle nine months, then get asked for full output in a 34°C humidex week. Failures cluster in exactly those days, which is also when every contractor in the GTA is booked out.
Timing
Book April through May. By late June, same-week availability disappears across Toronto, Mississauga and Vaughan.
What you get from us
