Eavestrough Cleaning in Toronto: When and Why
· by Diamond Home Services
How often to clean gutters in the GTA, what overflowing eavestroughs do to a Toronto basement, and what professional cleaning costs.
Clogged eavestroughs are the cheapest way to cause the most expensive damage to a Toronto home. Water that cannot reach the downspout goes over the edge and straight down against the foundation.
What clogged gutters actually cause
- Basement seepage. Foundation water problems in older Toronto neighbourhoods are overwhelmingly surface-water problems.
- Ice dams. Standing water freezes at the eave, backs up under shingles and enters the attic. This is the classic GTA January claim.
- Fascia and soffit rot. Saturated wood behind the trough fails quietly for years.
- Landscape washout and cracked walkways from overflow.
How often, in this climate
Twice a year for most homes: late spring after seeds and blossoms drop, and late fall once the maples are bare — usually mid to late November in Toronto. Homes under mature trees in the Beaches, Leaside or Oakville may need a third pass.
What professional cleaning includes
Hand-scooping debris (not just blowing it onto your lawn), flushing every run with water, clearing downspouts to confirm flow, checking hanger and spike security, resealing minor joint leaks, and photographing anything that needs repair.
GTA pricing
Typical single-storey bungalow: $150–$220. Two-storey detached: $220–$350. Add for steep pitches, three storeys, or heavy debris. Gutter guards do not eliminate cleaning — they reduce it, and still need annual checks.
Signs you are overdue
Water sheeting over the front edge during rain, plants growing in the trough, staining on the fascia, downspouts that stay dry in a downpour, or icicles along the eave in winter.
Safety note
Most home ladder falls happen at exactly this job. If your home is more than one storey, it is not worth the risk.
