7 Signs Your Chimney Needs Repair Before Winter

Spalling brick, white staining, a rusted damper, falling debris — the seven warning signs GTA homeowners should catch before the first cold snap.
Toronto winters are brutal on masonry. Water gets into brick, freezes, expands and splits it apart — the freeze-thaw cycle runs dozens of times each season across the GTA. Here is what to look for before you light the first fire.
1. Spalling or flaking brick
Faces of brick popping off, or a pile of orange grit at the base of the chimney, means water is already inside the masonry. Left alone, spalling turns into structural loss and a full rebuild instead of repointing.
2. Crumbling mortar joints
Mortar is sacrificial — it fails before the brick does. If you can scratch joints out with a key, the stack needs repointing. Catching it early is a few hundred dollars; ignoring it is several thousand.
3. White staining (efflorescence)
Chalky white streaks mean moisture is moving through the brick and depositing salts on the surface. It is a symptom, not the problem — the cap, crown or flashing is usually letting water in.
4. Rust on the damper or firebox
Steel does not rust inside a dry chimney. Rust means water is coming down the flue, which usually points to a missing or damaged chimney cap.
5. Debris in the firebox
Tile shards, sand or mortar chunks in the firebox mean the clay liner is breaking up. A compromised liner lets heat and combustion gases reach framing — this one is not a "next spring" item.
6. Smoke backing into the room
Draft problems come from blockages (nests, leaves, collapsed liner), a flue sized wrong for the appliance, or negative pressure from a tight, well-sealed home.
7. A damaged crown or cap
The crown is the concrete slab at the top. Hairline cracks there let water straight into the chimney core. A missing cap invites rain, snow and animals.
