Dryer Vent
8 Signs Your Dryer Vent Needs Cleaning Now
· by Diamond Home Services
Long drying times, a hot laundry room, burning smells and lint at the vent hood — the warning signs that your dryer duct is dangerously clogged.
A clogged dryer vent gives plenty of warning before it becomes a fire. Most homeowners just do not know what they are looking at. Here are the eight signs we see most across Toronto and the GTA.
1. Clothes take two cycles to dry
The single most common symptom. If a normal load needs 80 minutes instead of 40, moist air is not leaving the duct.
2. The dryer or laundry room gets very hot
Heat that should be exhausting outside is staying in the machine and the room. That heat also cooks the appliance — blown thermal fuses and burnt heating elements are usually a venting problem, not a dryer problem.
3. A burning or musty smell
Burning means lint sitting against a hot surface. Musty means humid air is condensing inside the duct or wall cavity, which eventually becomes mould.
4. Lint around the vent hood or door seal
Visible lint escaping at the hood, or collecting around the dryer door gasket, means the duct is backing up.
5. The exterior flapper never opens
Go outside and run the dryer. The flapper should push open with a strong, steady flow of warm air. Weak or no flow means a blockage — or a hood packed shut with lint and nesting material.
6. More lint in the trap than usual — or less
A sudden change in either direction signals restricted airflow through the system.
7. It has been over a year
Even with light use, lint accumulates. Annual cleaning is the baseline recommendation for Canadian homes.
8. You just moved in
Assume it was never done. We regularly pull decades of packed lint out of vents in resale homes across Etobicoke, Scarborough and Mississauga.
What we do about it
Rotary brush the full run, HEPA vacuum both ends, clear and test the exterior hood, and confirm airflow before we leave. Most visits take under an hour.
